Dear Folks,

REMEMBER!!  NO MARKET ON
CHRISTMAS DAY
Or
NEW YEAR'S DAY

Two major holidays falling on Fridays will create the longest break so far in market trips for Petit Jean Farm.

For me, market days are just plain fun!  You make those events seem like a holiday party every week.  I will miss it.

Sure hope you enjoy some good times over Christmas.  We have travel plans to visit old friends and family.

One thing we all can celebrate is how far we have come together this past year.  Your direct farm purchases have gone a long way in keeping several small independent farmers on the farm, which incidentally has never been harder.  A local sustainable food system has become rare indeed…and important too.  The conventional U.S. food system is terribly sophisticated but fragile and vulnerable…maybe even dangerous.  With our current network of farmer/producers and direct market customers, we are closer to a local food system now than since the 1940s.

Current events in Copenhagen remind us of another point to celebrate.  Grocery store food requires the consumption of more energy to produce a calorie of food than is contained in the food.  The only energy we know how to use is carbon based energy.  Burning carbon is what makes one whole economy run!

Even producing vegetables requires burning up carbon.

Grass based animal agriculture actually produces carbon in the farm of milk, meat, and manure, which properly managed builds up the land.

FREE RAIN AND FREE SUNSHINE plus grass plus grazing animals produces a carbon credit rather than a deficit.  And we get a healthy, tasty, real food to eat.  What a deal!

HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS!

We look forward to changing the world in partnership with you in 2010.
