What a weird and wonderful world! I heard it said recently that lemonade is made from artificial flavors, but furniture polish contains real lemon juice. There’s definitely something wrong with that.
However, participating in a food system that is literally down to earth gives us all an opportunity to connect with what is right in the world. Last Tuesday the frogs made their final reappearance after their third silence. This morning I was treated to a front row private performance by a roadrunner. He stood mere feet away, outside the front door, and flashed the brilliant orange markings on the sides of his head. I was also greeted by the news that our neighbor Meri’s Old Spot sow just had 16 piglets.
Meri raises her pigs and we raise our sheep here on the mountain in such a way that the frogs and the roadrunners get to keep their homes, too. Sustainable agriculture is complementary with wildlife habitat, and we love getting to see the wildlife.
