Dear Folks,

I saw a cute T-shirt yesterday with a smiling planet picture and the slogan “Make Everyday Earth Day.”  Silliness aside, that is an excellent idea!  Special days – like Earth Day and Memorial Day – are important, but they represent ideas that should not be limited to only one calendar date.  If something is significant enough to merit a holiday, it is probably worth year round daily attention.

Today, Memorial Day, is an excellent example of this.  Remembering those who died seeking liberty and justice should not be relegated to a one time only occasion.  Furthermore, our recognition should not be limited to those who die.  Many modern heroes go unnoticed as they work hard day after day in whatever area they find themselves.  Someone once said, “If we are great, it is because we stand on the backs of giants.”  Perhaps those with giant hearts and tired backs are never named, but they have contributed to great legacies nonetheless. 

Let us enjoy Memorial Day, Earth Day, and the other holidays that are meaningful to us, but not let them be limited by sunrise and sunset.  Let us live every day, full of good, meaning, and action!
