The calendar doesn’t acknowledge it yet, but I say it’s officially summer! It has certainly been hot enough and plenty of other signs are here. The fresh scent of newly mown grass and the delicious lightness of summer sandwiches define the season. Have you had a good BLT yet this year? Fresh farmers’ market lettuce and tomatoes combined with crispy Petit Jean Farm bacon can’t be beat! What flavor! You certainly can’t get that from the grocery store.
Most of you don’t need a reminder, but periodically we remind everyone anyway: we are not the grocery store. To borrow a phrase from Joel Salatin, we are the non-barcode people. When you buy beef, pork, and lamb from us, you are buying real meat, real food. Have you read the ingredient list on some of your grocery store’s “food-like substances” lately? Kind of scary. But when you buy Petit Jean Farm beef, pork, and lamb, that’s exactly what you’re getting, beef, pork, and lamb, straight from the field or the forest.
Another aspect of buying real meat from real farmers is that we sell the meat by the animal. Therefore, we price the meat by the animal, too, not by the pound. When you buy an individual steak or other cut, you are buying a portion of the cow, pig, or sheep. If you really want to start maximizing what you get for what you spend, the best way to do that is by buying in bulk. The bigger the portion of the animal you buy, the lower your cost per cut.
