Dear Folks,
Greetings from North Carolina! As many of you know, there are lots of details of daily life to figure out upon moving to a new place. One of the most pressing is finding food. You can live out of boxes for a while, but you have to start eating immediately. One of my concerns about moving has been finding good sources of meat. I know the importance of relationships between farmers and eaters. Now that I am on the other side of the table, I am every bit as interested in cultivating that type of connection.
My first stop for groceries in my new city was at the Weaver Street Market, a community-owned co-operative grocery store. What fun to find pictures hanging above the meat case of farm families and their animals outside on green grass. In a nation whose predominant food culture is constantly trying to divorce the things we eat from their real sources, it is refreshing to see that connection embraced. My next food finding venture took me to explore the mainline chain grocery store. Even there, local options were available, particularly on the milk aisle. I was very excited when Saturday came and I could explore the local farmers’ market. The Carrboro Farmers’ Market was full of wonderful seasonal produce, and included several farmers who raise beef, pork, or chicken. I think some of them were even the same farms featured in the pictures I had seen earlier in the week. I am still just at the beginning of new food relationships, but I am excited to see them develop. I encourage you to appreciate the opportunities you have in central Arkansas to actually know your farmers. If you’re not a regular customer yet, introduce yourself at the market and start enjoying some of the great local food Petit Jean Farm has to offer!
Wishing you a great week of food discoveries,
Jacqueline
